2 Pm on Day one of the tour
This expedition is a game of two halves, meticulously designed to showcase the extreme geographic diversity of Morocco. You will push your physical boundaries during the first three days as you tackle high-altitude alpine terrain, relying on local guides and mule teams to reach the roof of North Africa.
Once off the mountain, the pace shifts from a strenuous trek to an immersive cultural road trip, trading your hiking boots for a comfortable private vehicle, historic mud-brick kasbahs, and the tranquil, vast expanse of the Saharan dunes
Your adventure begins with a morning pick-up from your accommodation in Marrakech for a scenic 1.5-hour drive into the High Atlas Mountains. Arriving at the bustling trekking hub of Imlil (1,740m), you will meet your professional mountain guide and the mule team who will handle the heavy luggage. From here, you begin a steady, rewarding uphill trek through the Mizane Valley. The trail winds past terraced fields and the riverside shrine of Sidi Chamharouch, a revered local pilgrimage site. As the afternoon progresses, the landscape shifts from green valleys to stark alpine rock. You will finish the day arriving at the Toubkal Refuge (Basecamp) nested at $3,207text{ m}$, where you will settle into the mountain lodge, fuel up with a hearty carbohydrate-rich dinner, and get to sleep early.
An intense 4:00 AM wake-up call marks the start of your summit bid. You will trek by the light of your headlamp under a brilliant starry sky, a strategy designed to conquer the steep slopes before the midday sun and shifting mountain winds pick up. The path climbs steeply through heavy rock fields and loose scree slopes, demanding focus and steady pacing. After a challenging چند hours of climbing, you will step onto the summit of Mount Toubkal (4,167m). Standing at the highest point in North Africa offers an unforgettable 360-degree panorama that stretches across the entire Atlas range and down toward the distant, hazy plains of the Sahara. After celebrating your achievement and taking photos, you will carefully descend back down to the safety of the Toubkal Refuge for a celebratory hot lunch and a well-deserved afternoon of rest.
After a well-earned, relaxed breakfast at the refuge, you will begin the familiar trek back down the mountain slopes. Moving at a leisurely pace, the descent allows you to fully take in the mountain views that were hidden in the dark on your way up. By midday, you will arrive back in the vibrant village of Imlil. Instead of rushing onward, you will check into a comfortable, traditional Berber guesthouse (Gîte) for a dedicated recovery day. Use the afternoon to give your legs a rest, take a long hot shower, and sip fresh mint tea on a terrace. It is a peaceful, quiet evening looking up at the high peaks you just conquered, allowing your body to acclimatize and rest before the desert journey begins.
You will say goodbye to your mountain team in the morning and meet your private desert driver. Trading your trekking boots for a comfortable vehicle, you will leave the high peaks behind and drive up and over the dramatic Tizi n’Tichka mountain pass (2,260 m), enjoying sweeping views of the winding mountain roads. Dropping down the eastern slopes, you will tour the breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Benhaddou. This historic, fortified clay village is incredibly well-preserved and instantly recognizable from Hollywood films like Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven. After lunch and an exploration of the ancient kasbah, your journey continues past Ouarzazate and deep into the winding rock formations of the Dades Valley, where you will check into a beautiful valley hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.
The morning begins with a drive through the jaw-dropping Todra Gorge, a massive, narrow limestone canyon where the sheer rock walls rise $300text{ m}$ straight up on either side of a crystal-clear river. After a short walk through the canyon, you will jump back in the vehicle and watch the landscape turn flat and arid as you drive east toward Erfoud. Suddenly, the massive orange dunes of Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) rise dramatically on the horizon like a solid wall of sand. At the edge of the desert, you will trade your vehicle for a camel team. You will trek into the shifting dunes as the sun sets, painting the Saharan sky in brilliant shades of pink and gold. The trek concludes at a luxury desert camp hidden deep in the dunes, where you will enjoy a traditional feast, sit around a roaring campfire listening to live Berber drumming, and sleep in a deluxe desert tent.
You are encouraged to wake up early to catch the incredible sunrise over the crest of the dunes, a moment of absolute silence and shifting colors. This day is dedicated entirely to exploring the rich culture and hidden corners of the desert region. You will head out in a 4×4 to visit isolated nomadic families living in traditional tents, learning about their way of life over a cup of tea. Later, you will visit the village of Khamlia to listen to historic, rhythmic Gnawa music performed by descendants of formerly enslaved people from sub-Saharan Africa. You can try sandboarding down the massive slopes in the afternoon, or simply relax. You will spend a second, unhurried night in the quiet magic of your desert camp, allowing you to truly absorb the peace of the Sahara without feeling rushed.
Your final day begins with a morning departure from the dunes as you start the journey back west toward Marrakech. You will travel through the lush, emerald-green Draa Valley, a spectacular oasis lined with millions of date palms, ancient kasbahs, and historic mud-brick fortresses stretching for miles. The drive continues back up into the High Atlas Mountains, winding across the passes with stops at scenic lookout points for lunch, coffee, and photos along the highway. As the mountain air warms, you will descend back into the plains and arrive in the bright lights of Marrakech by late afternoon or early evening, concluding your unforgettable peak-to-desert Moroccan expedition.
You need a good level of cardiovascular fitness and endurance. The trek does not require technical climbing skills, but Day 2 involves a steep, strenuous $4,167text{ m}$ climb over loose scree for 6 to 7 hours. Regular hiking or cardio training before your trip is highly recommended
Yes. You do not need to pack heavy winter gear or hiking poles for your entire trip. High-quality trekking gear—including sleeping bags, heavy jackets, headlamps, and hiking poles—is readily available to rent for a very low fee when you arrive in Imlil on Day 1.
The mountain refuge is rustic, offering shared dormitory-style rooms and basic facilities designed for hikers. In contrast, the Sahara portion is highly comfortable; your luxury desert camp features spacious, private walk-in tents equipped with real beds and private, ensuite hot showers and toilets.
You will experience extreme climate shifts. The High Atlas peaks can be freezing and windy even in the summer, requiring warm layers, a beanie, and gloves. The Sahara Desert will be hot during the day but drops in temperature significantly at night, so a light jacket or fleece is necessary.
