Sahara Desert Trip

Bright orange sand dunes contrast with the black shadows of camels and their passengers. This could be any time in history. Those travellers could be merchants traversing the sea of sand we call the Sahara Desert in search of riches, or they could be tourists complaining about the lack of comfort their camel is providing.

I was there on a 3 day Sahara Desert tour which I booked in Marrakech. The tour is much more than just sand and camels though – it includes a cinematic village, an impressive canyon, a drive through snow-capped mountains and a huge variety of stunning views. Here are the stops we made along the way (and also keep reading for all the details on booking the tour/getting a good price).

3 days private Morocco Sahara desert tour starts in the morning and we pick up you from any place in Marrakech city. Then we drive towards Ait Benhaddou, passing the highest road pass in Morocco, called Tizi n’Tichka mountain pass. We will enjoy amazing sceneries through Berber village.

Once we arrive at Ait Benhaddou we will have guided tour in the kasbah and we explore the village. You will have a traditional Moroccan lunch here. We off to Ouarzazate city to explore its movie studios where many famous Hollywood movies were shot. We will visit also local kasbah.

We drive through the valley of Roses and also the “Road of 1000s Kasbahs” to reach Dades Gorges where we spend the night in local riad/hotel with dinner

[su_heading size=”14″ align=”left”]Day 2: Dades Gorges – Todra Gorges – Merzouga ( Sahara desert ) [/su_heading]

After breakfast, we drive toward Todgha gorges, and we will visit the valley and its gorges. Then we drive towards Erfoud, famous for fossil products. We continue to Rissani, traditional city, once you get there you may feel you get back in time.

We drive to Merzouga, which is the gate to the desert dunes and from here we ride camels for around 90 minutes to reach desert camp where we enjoy a mint tea with the Nomads.

We will climb high dunes to watch the sunset in the desert of Morocco. We will enjoy traditional dinner at camp and friendly Nomad guides will play music for us around a campfire. This night we sleep under nomads desert tents in Merzouga Sahara desert.

[su_heading size=”14″ align=”left”]Day 3: Sahara Desert – Ouarzazate – Marrakech [/su_heading]

Wake up early, just prior to sunrise, we have a  1h30 camel ride at sunrise to explore the area further and we head back to Merzouga on our Camels.

When we reach Merzouga, have breakfast & have the opportunity to shower and then we begin our journey through the stony desert and over the Atlas mountains, with plenty of stops for photos, exploring and lunch as we return to Marrakech. The usual arrival time in Marrakech is between 17:00hrs and 18:00hrs.

In the southeast of Morocco, the city of Merzouga ( Sahara Desert ), which is nicknamed by tourists as "Bahr El Remal" and "Durrat Al-Maghribia Desert", is 130 km from the city of Errachidia, which has vast sandy areas intended for visitors to treat rheumatism. Merzouga dunes stretching 22 km and five km wide offer the opportunity to reflect on the change of sand colours according to the change of daylight, especially when squaring at the top of those dunes, which are the highest in Morocco, most of the people of Merzouga find their simplicity away from the hustle and bustle of contemporary life, In particular thanks to traditional music, hospitality and other things that people inherited from their ancestors. The city can be reached by land or air, the land route runs from the city of Errachidia, which is a transit point for any traveller to the region, and due to the city's status and attractiveness, a direct line between Casablanca and Merzouga was operated by public transport bus during the summer.
